Texas Music Theater goes smoke-free

STAFF REPORT

Texas Music Theater (TMT) owners announced this week that the downtown performance hall will go smoke-free during ticketed shows, the first music venue in the  city to do so.

The Texas Music Theater is at 120 East San Antonio Street on the square in downtown San Marcos.

The city of San Marcos allows smoking in bars, restaurants and music venues and most places of business. Last year, the council considered a citywide vote on whether to implement a ban on smoking tobacco in public places and could reconsider the issue next year.

“We want the Texas Music Theater experience to be a great music experience for everyone and believe a smoke-free environment is a more comfortable, not to mention healthier, experience for our guests and the artists who play here, both nonsmokers and those who smoke,” said Jodi Tidwell, the theater’s spokesperson. “Since the first night we enacted the policy we have had many people thank us for the decision. Several Central Texas residents have told us they could now enjoy live music without driving to Austin.”

Said San Marcos Mayor Daniel Guerrero, “Community wellness is one of the key strategic goals of our City Council. City facilities are all smoke-free and we are pleased that a popular music venue that attracts so many people to San Marcos is taking the lead on this as well.”

Musicians and patrons have asked the venue to go smoke-free including several requests specifically directed towards the TMT’s New Year’s concert featuring  recording artist and Hays County resident  Ray Wylie Hubbard. Judy Hubbard, Ray Wylie’s wife and manager said, ““So many of Ray Wylie’s fans prefer the comfort of smoke-free shows, so we were thrilled to hear the Texas Music Theater has now become non-smoking – just when we thought the place couldn’t get any better!”

The city will install a large city-owned ashtrays in front of the building and smoking will be allowed in front of the theater away from the door. TMT will still allow smoking during non-ticketed shows but may decide to go entirely smoke-free based on customer input.

The Texas Music Theater is a live music venue in a 71-year-old renovated building on the square in downtown San Marcos. It features two levels, three bars, VIP seating and a state-of-the-art acoustic system. The San Marcos Downtown Association awarded  the venue “Best Adaptive Re-use of Space” in 2011.
