One of the popular attractions to the Friends of the San Marcos Cemetery’s annual From Here To Eternity 5-K Walk/Run has always been the unique hand- crafted trophies that winners receive.
The 9th annual From Here To Eternity run is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 13, 2012 starting at 8 a.m. on the corner of Blanco and Hutchison Streets by the Lamar School Annex. Winners will receive handmade tombstone trophies.
The only thing different about this year’s trophies is the fact that Betty Wolverton will not be making them. It was Wolverton who came up with the idea for the mini-tombstone trophies when the Friends group first launched the walk/run as a fundraiser.
She designed the trophies, made the mold in which they are cast and each year quietly made the 40 or so trophies. This year Wolverton has “passed the gavel” – or, in this case, the mold – to dedicated Friends volunteer Shannon Fitzpatrick who recruited her son Lewis to help cast the trophies for this year’s run.
The “From Here To Eternity” 5-K Walk/Run is sponsored by the Friends of the San Marcos Cemetery, a non-profit organization devoted to promoting the resources, services and historic significance of the historic city cemetery. Last year’s run attracted 66 competitors.
Forms for on-line registration are up on both the Friends and the San Marcos Runners Club websites. Runners and walkers compete in age and gender divisions, which is staged by the San Marcos Runners Club.
Last year, 23-year-old Richard Powell of Sugar Land posted the best overall time in the run with a time of 17:34 minutes. Twenty-nine-year-old Amber Jones of San Marcos posted a time of 23:24 to become the overall female champion.
The race entry fee is $15 before the end of the day Saturday, Oct. 6. It will increase to $20 after the early registration deadline. Current Texas State University students will receive a $3 discount with a student ID.
The challenging 5-K course begins at the San Marcos CISD’s Lamar Annex on the corner of Blanco and Hutchison Streets and continues on residential streets that vary from flat to hilly, and loops through the San Marcos City Cemetery before finishing back at Lamar. View the race route map on the San Marcos Runners Club website here.
Race categories are divided into gender and age divisions. Age divisions include 19 and under, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60 and over. Day of race registration will begin at 7 a.m. at the Lamar School Annex.
Once again, David Alexander and the San Marcos Runners Club will be officiating the walk/run. On the day of the race, creatively designed tee-shirts will be presented to the first 75 registered participants. Awards will be presented at approximately 9 a.m.
According to Friends of the San Marcos Cemetery President Pat Murdock, sponsors for this year’s race include Thomason Funeral Home, Pennington Funeral Home and Jane Hughson.
