As if you needed another reason to live in San Marcos — the river, the college, the proximity to Austin and the Hill Country — consider this latest distinction:

Here's another good reason to live in San Marcos: Rio Vista.

San Marcos has been named one of the top 10 cheapest places to live not just in Texas but in the entire United States, according to the Council for Community and Economic Research. Comparing expenses for housing, utilities, groceries and other goods and services in 300 urban areas, the nonprofit group says that San Marcos’ cost of living is 13 percent below the national average.

Three Texas cities are even cheaper. Harlingen, Wichita Falls and McAllen have been deemed thee three least expensive urban areas in the nation, the research group says.

The most expensive place in America came as no surprise. Manhattan, New York, was more than twice the national average for the second quarter of 2012.

Based in Virginia, the Council for Community and Economic Research determines its cost-of-living index from more than 90,000 prices covering about 60 different items.
