Functional Girl: A column

Functional Girl CJ LEGARE

Q. Dear Functional Girl: My hairstylist just moved out of state and I don’t know what to do! I’ve been with her for 10 years and I’m really not looking forward to trying to find someone new. Any tips to make sure I don’t end up in a butcher’s chair? — Tricia R.

A. Dear Patty: Losing a good “hairapist” can be a nightmare, especially if she didn’t refer you to anyone. And boy, have I been there.

When I first moved to Kyle, it took more than a year of trial and error before I found Valerie Phipps, stylist extraordinaire. According to Val, word of mouth is your best bet. Every head of hair you see is a calling card for the artist who created the look.

So keep your eyes open and anytime you see someone with fierce hair, pay the girl a compliment and let her know she looks good—then find out who makes her look so good! That’s how I found Valerie.

Remember, your relationship with your stylist is a sacred one. It’s their job to make you look and feel like a goddess. But just because someone can create amazing hair doesn’t mean they’re right for you. Always make an appointment for a consultation first. Not only will this allow you to discuss your styling needs and bounce ideas off one another, but it will also help you determine whether or not your personalities are compatible.

Q. Dear Functional Girl: My kids are bugging me to find some new dessert recipes for them. Do you have any refreshing warm-weather dessert ideas? — Kyra F.

A. Dear Kyra: I have a wonderful dessert solution for you! My friend Annette is a fabulous cook and serves up the best Strawberry Shortcake I’ve ever had. Not only is it delicious, it’s super simple.

You’ll need strawberries, whipped cream, sweetened condensed milk and sour cream cake. You can purchase the cake at the grocery store, or make your own.

A quick Google search will produce several easy-to-follow recipes. The prep is easy. Wash and slice your strawberries, and lightly toast the cake slices, if you prefer. Pile your cake with strawberries, drizzle on sweetened condensed milk, top with whipped cream and enjoy! I promise you, your kids won’t complain about this dessert. They’ll try to bribe you for seconds with hugs and kisses.

Functional Girl CJ Legare lives in Kyle with her husband, Joshua, and is addicted to 2 percent organic milk. If you’ve got a question or comment for Functional Girl, email her here. She blogs at
