San Marcos police are trying to identify the victim of a fatal collision between a tractor trailer and a bicycle that occurred around 2 a.m. Monday on the southbound access road of Interstate 35.

The semi driver called San Marcos police about the collision at 2:04 a.m., which occurred in the 5600 block of the southbound lane of the I35 access road in a dark area unlit by street lights. The area is south of exit 199 at Posey Road, near San Marcos’ southern tip.

The driver told police that he crested the top of a hill and the bicyclist was suddenly in front of him in the center of the right lane. He applied his brakes but was unable to avoid hitting the bicycle.

The victim was described as a white male in his late 30s or early 40s, 130 pounds, 5’7” to 5’10” with long shaggy brown graying hair. He was dressed in a gray T-shirt, gray shorts and desert tan combat boots.

According to investigators, the bicycle did not have a headlight or rear red reflector required by state law for night time operation of a bicycle.
