North LBJ Drive, from Holland Street to Forest Drive, will be closed to southbound traffic beginning today while construction crews install two large water mains under the southbound lane of the roadway.
All southbound N. LBJ Drive traffic will be detoured to Chestnut Street. The closure is expected to last until October. The northbound lane on N. LJB will remain open and driveways will be accessible throughout the construction period. Chestnut will stay open to two-way traffic.
The city will install both 24-inch and 12-inch water transmission mains in the southbound lane of N.LBJ.
These mains are a segment of Comanche 24-inch Transmission Line Project that will install more than a mile — 6,640 feet — of water transmission pipelines from Ed J.L. Green Drive at the Spring Lake Booster Pump Station to the Comanche Standpipe Water Tank located at the intersection of Comanche and Sessom Drive.
The project will increase system capacity and service reliability. The N. LBJ portion of the project will install approximately 1,340 feet of lines from Forest Street to Peach Tree Street.
Santa Clara Construction Ltd. of Austin was awarded the $2.6 million construction contract by the city council on May 1.
Early in 2013, a similar detour to Chestnut from N. LBJ will occur in association with the reconstruction of North LBJ.
