STAFF REPORT

State Sen. Judith Zaffirini, a Laredo Democrat whose newly constituted SD-21 includes a sliver of eastern Hays County, will speak this week at Texas State University.

The senator’s visit will be 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 20, at the Sac-in-Pac Room at Bobcat Stadium.

Zaffirini has chaired the senate’s Higher Education committee since 2011 and, during the legislative session, co-chaired a special joint House-Senate committee on Higher Education Governance, Excellence, and Transparency. She has served in the senate since 1987, making her the second longest-serving in the body.

Under both the redistricting plan enacted by the Legislature and the interim plan enacted by federal courts, Zaffirini stretches from her home turf in Laredo through South Texas and San Antonio to eastern Travis County. It incldues all of Caldwell and past of Guadalupe counties.

The rest of the county lies in SD-25, represented by another veteran senator, Jeff Wentworth, who is currently in a Republican Party primary runoff with New Braunfels emergency room doctor Donna Campbell.
