U.S. Rep. Lamar Smith, a San Antonio Republican who represents part of San Marcos, toured Gary Job Corps Center for the first time recently, attended by the center’s officials and students and local dignitaries.

The congressman, whose CD-21 includes western San Marcos, Buda and other areas of Hays County, declared the Job Corps a “fabulous place,” according to a press release put out by the center’s spokesman.

Sited on 800 acres of a former Army Air Force base on San Marcos’ eastern edge, the Job Corps trains as many as 1,660 students at a time in 25 vocational programs. A contractor, Management & Training Corp., operates the center on behalf of the U.S. Department of Labor.
