STAFF REPORT

A Travis Elementary School teacher resigned today after the parents of a middle school student said the two had a sexual relationship.

Steve DeLeon, who taught physical education at the school, was suspended on Monday after school district officials learned of the allegation. On Tuesday, he resigned from his position, district officials said in a statement. DeLeon has not been charged but the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.

Here is the statement:

“When SMCISD became aware of the allegations of an improper relationship between a Travis Elementary teacher and a middle school student, the teacher was immediately placed on suspension with pay and the district began an investigation. The allegations were also immediately reported to the San Marcos Police Department. The district is cooperating with law enforcement regarding the investigation. The teacher submitted his resignation this morning. Because of the laws protecting student privacy rights and pertaining to criminal investigations, the district is limited in the information it can disclose. We want to reassure the entire SMCISD community that the safety of our students, faculty and staff remains our top priority.”
