COLLEGE STATION — The Texas State softball team grabbed a 5-3 win over Bethune-Cookman this afternoon at the Aggie Softball Complex.
The victory gave the Bobcats their first win in the NCAA College Station Regional, and a spot in the nightcap versus host Texas A&M.
Texas State didn’t wait too long to put runs on the board, as it scored a pair of runs in the second inning to take the early lead. Senior catcher Megan Parten had a timely hit once again, and this time it was up the middle to push Chandler Hall and Shelby Carnline home with two outs in the bottom of the second.
The second inning was a wild one for the Bobcats. Selena Hernandez had a leadoff walk followed by a bunt single by Brooke Baker to put runners on first and second with no outs. Next to bat was Haley Lemons who laid down a solid sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third. Texas State would then score on a squeeze play when Anna Hernandez had a solid bunt with just enough spin on it to score S. Hernandez. Brook Baker also scored on the play after an error by the catcher to give Texas State a 4-0 lead.
The Bobcats tallied their final run of the game when pinch runner Brittney Garcia scored on a throwing error by the pitcher in the fourth inning. The run was the 15th of the season for Garcia.
Anne Marie Taylor (17-8) fanned five batters in her complete-game effort in the circle. Shanel Tolbert (30-26) suffered the loss for Bethune-Cookman.
Texas State will play Texas A&M at 7 p.m. tonight at the Aggie Softball Complex. The winner will advance to tomorrow’s championship game versus LSU.
