The contest for the Republican nomination in Senate District 25 shows no signs of cooling.
On Monday, former Railroad Commissioner Elizabeth Ames Jones released a television ad accusing incumbent state Sen. Jeff Wentworth, R-San Antonio, of ethical lapses.
The race has been one of the state’s most contentious. Donna Campbell, an emergency room doctor, is also vying for the spot, though she trails the other contenders in financial support.
In early May, Wentworth filed ethics complaints against Jones and her husband, Will Jones, contending that they failed to adequately disclose his lobbying practices during her service on the Railroad Commission.
In a television ad of his own, Wentworth has portrayed Jones as a puppet under the control of the influential advocacy organization Texans for Lawsuit Reform, which the ad refers to as “a big business special interest group from Houston.”
Jones struck back with an ad featuring Bexar County District Attorney Susan Reed, who said, “I know political campaigns can be rough, but Wentworth’s attacks on Elizabeth Ames Jones are exactly what’s wrong with politics today.”
