Tejano Democrats endorses Doggett over Latina opponents

STAFF REPORT

Hays County Tejano Democrats has endorsed U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett in his primary race against two Latinas, State Rep. Sylvia Romo and activist Maria Luisa Alvarado.

The Hays chapter joins the Austin and Bexar County Tejano Democrats groups which previously endorsed Doggett. The new minority-majority Congressional District 35 is weighted toward San Antonio, which is hungry to add another congressperson to its delegation; Doggett is an Anglo who lives in Austin.

“It is insulting that Rick Perry and the Republican legislature expected minorities to vote against Doggett because they put him in a minority district. Minority districts are intended to give minorities an opportunity to select their own representatives—in this case, we select Congressman Doggett,” said Sandra Tenorio, the Buda Mayor Pro Tem who chairs the statewide Texas Tejano Democrats.

The local group also endorsed Candace Duval for Congressional District 21, David Peterson for Pct. 1 Constable (over a Latino challenger, Rodrigo Amaya), James Kohler for Pct. 2 Constable, Juan Miguel Arredondo for San Marcos CISD board of trustees and Holly Smith Raymond for Hays CISD board of trustees.
