San Marcos police have released additional details on a fatal accident that occurred just after midnight on Thursday, April 5 on the Interstate 35 east frontage road involving two vehicles and a police unit.
Zoila Reyna Reachi 59, of Dallas died at the scene in the 2200 block of the northbound access road after her vehicle was struck from behind by a Honda CRVdriven by an 88-year old driver, according to Assistant Police Chief Chase Stapp.
The victim, who was standing by the passenger door, was thrown into the median next to the road where she was then struck by a police cruiser that had taken evasive action to avoid the collision. Her husband, Jacobo Reachi, of Dallas, was not seriously injured in the crash and was treated and released at Central Texas Medical Center.
Police investigators said that Zoila Reachi was driving a Ford F-150 pickup northbound on I-35 around 12:30 a.m. on April 5. She stopped the truck in the right lane of the I-35 frontage road just south of Wonder World Drive.
She got out of the vehicle and was standing near the passenger door when the pickup truck was struck from behind by a Honda CRV driven by Marjorie Flythe, 88, of Austin, who also was traveling northbound on the access road. She was treated and released at the hospital.
The police unit, driven by officer Sam Myers, was traveling behind the Honda and took evasive action to the right when he saw the collision occur. The police cruiser drove into the median and struck Zoila Reachi as she was thrown to the side of the road. The officer was not injured.
Investigation into the collision is continuing, Stapp said. No charges are expected to be filed.
