The Gold team scored nine points in the fourth quarter to break a 17-17 tie and went on to defeat the Maroon squad in the Texas State Maroon-Gold Spring Game at Bobcat Stadium on Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Stadium.
The Gold squad jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first two quarters. They came out throwing the football when Tyler Arndt completed a 39-yard pass to Jafus Gaines on the first play from scrimmage. Jason Dann capped off the drive with the first points of the game when he kicked a 42-yard field goal with 9:56 left to play in the opening quarter.
In the second quarter, Arndt completed a 40-yard touchdown pass to Gaines and Jonathan Velasco added the extra point to increase the lead to 10-0 with 10:29 left to play in the first half.
Jack Rhoades also threw a 13-yard pass to Larry Centers, Jr. and Velasco added the extra point to give the Gold Team a 17-0 lead with 7:30 left in the second quarter.
The Maroon team bounced back in the final 14 seconds of the first half when Duke DeLancellotti completed a 31-yard pass to Isaiah Battle and Will Johnson added the extra point to cut the Gold team’s lead to 17-7 at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Maroon came out charging as DeLancellotti completed a 60-yard pass to Marcus Curry for a touchdown. After James McNeill added the extra point, Johnson kicked a 23-yard field goal to tie the score at 17-17 with 21 seconds left in the third quarter.
The Gold team regained the lead when Terrance Franks ran for a 25-yard touchdown in the first two seconds of the fourth quarter. Velasco missed the extra point attempt to make the score 23-17 with 11:48 left to play.
Dann gave the Gold team some breathing room when he kicked a 39-yard field goal after Arndt had led them on an 11-play drive that erased 4:23 on the clock. Dann’s kick hit the left upright and bounced in for the field goal to give the Gold team the 26-17 victory.
Arndt ended the day completing 13 of his 19 passes for 218 yards. He also gained 22 yards on five carries. Rhoades completed both of his passes for 50 yards.
The leading receiver for the Gold team was Andy Erickson, who caught five passes for 119 yards. He had the longest reception in the game when he caught a 70-yard throw from Arndt. Gaines also caught three passes for 81 yards and Chandler Coffey caught a 37-yard pass from Rhoades after moving over to the offense this spring.
Franks led the rushing attack for the Gold team with 64 yards on 11 carries.
Freshman quarterback Jordan Moore was the leading rusher for the Maroon team after gaining 46 yards on 13 carries. Curry also gained 30 yards on five carries and caught three passes for 71 yards.Email | Print
