Lady Rattlers honored

San Marcos High School athletes were presented with awards on Feb. 4 at the annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day banquet held at Texas State University.

The following SMHS volleyball players were honored:

-SMHS senior Jordan Carswell – Perseverance Award
-SMHS senior Lizzie Brown – All-Around Athlete Award
-SMHS senior Allie Bryant – Spirit Award
-SMHS senior Amanda Hunt – Sportsmanship Award

SMHS student-athletes Madelyn Swinney, Stephanie Marmalejo, Jessica Hernandez, Nikki Sanchez, Sabrina Garcia, and Rosalind McKinney were also nominated and recognized at the banquet.

National Girls and Women in Sports Day is celebrated in all 50 states with community-based events, award ceremonies, and activities honoring the achievements and encouraging participation of girls and women in sports. The event began in 1987 as a day to remember Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman for her athletic achievements and her efforts to ensure equality for women’s sports. Hyman died of Marfan’s Syndrome in 1986 while competing in a volleyball tournament in Japan.
