A district win on the road Tuesday night for the San Marcos Baptist Academy Bears varsity boys (16-6 overall) has set up a district show-down this Friday between the Bears and the New Braunfels Christian Academy Wildcats.

The Bears took their fifth district win of the season (and tenth win in a row) Tuesday against San Antonio-Keystone with a 78-40 victory. Junior Jakob Campbell of San Marcos led the team with 35 points, while senior Devante Williams of Cypress added 16 and senior Sabas Castillo of San Marcos tossed in 9.

Other contributors in the game were Estevan Gutierrez with 6; Brett Mackall and Jeff Sainah with 5; and E.J. Uzor with 2.

“I thought the boys played well defensively and I’m noticing that our chemistry on the court is getting a lot better,” Coach Kelia Price said. “We still have a lot of things to work on, but we are looking good in the direction that we’re going.”

Friday’s rematch with the NBCA Wildcats will determine the TAPPS 3, District 6 district champion. In their first game against the Bears, the Wildcats came out ahead 47-56. If the Bears get the win Friday, they will own a share of the district title with NBCA. A loss would put the SMA second in district behind the Wildcats.

The 8 p.m. tipoff will take place in New Braunfels.
