The San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter will be partnering with Purina to host Pets for Seniors adoptions at the shelter beginning Jan. 23.
Purina is sponsoring the full adoption fee for seniors who adopt their pets from participating Purina Pets for Seniors organizations while funds are available.
Local senior citizens aged 60 and older will be invited to spend time visiting with the shelter’s adoptable dogs and cats and consider bringing a furry friend into their home.
“Finding homeless pets permanent homes is our organization’s biggest priority,” said Kara Montiel, shelter supervisor of the San Marcos Regional Animal Shelter. “By introducing Hays County-area seniors to our pets, we are hoping to ensure not only the well-being of our pets, but also the well-being of local seniors.”
This opportunity is part of the Purina Pets for Seniors Program, which is intended to promote life-enriching benefits of pet ownership among senior citizens across the country. During the year, animal shelters nationwide are rallying together to encourage local senior citizens to meet their adoptable pets and ultimately find a companion to adopt.
“We truly understand the joy and benefits pets bring to people of all ages, especially senior citizens,” said Dr. Steve Cohn, a Purina Pets for Seniors veterinarian. “By rallying together with local shelters, we allow seniors to understand the benefits of having a pet as a companion, as well as provide resources to help bring a loving pet into their homes.”
