San Marcos Academy’s varsity soccer team (now 9-3 overall) notched another win Tuesday night when they shut-out non-district rival Kerrville Our Lady of the Hills 1-0 in their second of three home games this week.

Sophomore Alex Hasegawa of China scored the SMA Bears’ only goal off a Cole Williams throw-in in the first half of play. Williams is a senior from Kyle.

“It was a tight game,” Coach Scott Moore said. “We were missing four of our starters due to injuries, so that made it tough. Our goalkeeper was one of those players who was out, so Memo Borrego took over at that position. He had never played goalkeeper before, but just jumped in there and helped us get the shutout. We played especially well in the first half, getting180 passes in all.”

Kerrville only had one loss on the season before facing the Bears. The Hawks are not in the Bears’ district, but are in the same TAPPS division.

Next up for the Bears is a Friday night game with non-district foe Austin Khabele at Ingram-A+ FCU Stadium on the SMA campus. The Senior Night game will start at 7 p.m.

However, it’s the re-match with Austin Regents Jan. 23 that will determine the TAPPS Division 3, District 3 championship. The Bears fell to Regents 1-2 in their first meeting this season and hope to even the record and come out as district champ Monday before a home crowd. The game will start at 7 p.m.
