STAFF REPORT
The San Marcos Area League of Women Voters will hold its 25th annual Texas Wine Tasting fundraiser later this month.
An important fundraiser for the LWV’s education services, the annual wine tasting traditionally features wines from a Texas winery. LWV’s wine tasting committee, chaired by Dorothy Evans, chose at least six wines from the Messina Hof Winery of Bryan for this year’s event, which will also feature a silent auction.
The event will be Tuesday, Jan. 24 from 6-8 p.m. at the Quail Creek Country Club in San Marcos. The club is located at 2701 Airport Highway. Tickets are $25 at the door or $20 if purchased in advance from any LWV member.
Proceeds from the wine tasting help fund the publication of LWV’s local voters’ guide and are used to offset expenses incurred by hosting political debates and meet-and-greet receptions.
Returning to Quail Creek to cater LWV’s 25th annual wine tasting will be All Occasions Catering of Seguin, a full service catering company more than 25 years old.
“Messina Hof Winery & Resort, a Texas vineyard established in 1977 by Paul and Merrill Bonarrigo, is rooted in the union of two family heritages,” said LWV spokesperson Pat Murdock. “Winemaker Paul Bonarrigo’s family dates back seven generations to Messina, Sicily. Merrill’s family is from Hof, Germany. The family-owned business operates on a mission statement based on family, tradition and romance and is dedicated to producing gold medal winning wine in every variety and to maximizing opportunities developed from the wines in a tourism destination focused on the best in hospitality, food and customer service.”
LWV is a nonpartisan, political organization whose goal is to encourage the informed and active participation of citizens in government. Open to men and women, LWV’s guiding principles focus on belief in the representative form of government and individual liberties protected by the U.S. Constitution. The centerpiece of LWV’s voter education program is its voters guide published before to each local election.
