Construction begins this week on Crockett Elementary School’s new outdoor fitness track, which is being funded by an organization established in memory of Dawn Breihan-Hopp.

Breihan-Hopp, a Crockett Elementary teacher who taught physical education for 34 years, passed away last December. She graduated from San Marcos High School in 1971.

“In her honor, friends organized the organization called Angel Drops to continue Breihan’s legacy, with the goal of growing one woman’s passion into a movement of physical fitness for youth and the community,” said Iris Campbell, San Marcos CISD spokesperson.

Rick LaBuhn, Crockett Elementary principal, said the estimated cost of the fitness track is $20,000 and all funding is from Angel Drops. The track’s groundbreaking ceremony, which was on Monday, was attended by SMCISD students and staff, and Breihan-Hopp’s friends and family.

Campbell said the track is slated for completion sometime in January 2012, with a formal dedication planned for the first part of February 2012.
