Current plans call for the downtown post office in San Marcos to close no sooner than six months, a U.S. Postal Service spokesperson told the San Marcos Mercury today.

As part of a national effort to re-evaluate postal facilities, USPS plans to sell the downtown location at 301 North Guadalupe Street and relocate the retail, bulk mail acceptance, and post office box operations to a newly renovated area of the San Marcos Carrier Annex, located at 201 South Stagecoach Trail near Wonder World Drive and Hunter Road. Once the downtown operations have moved to the annex facility, the annex will become the San Marcos Main Post Office.

Spokesperson Sam Bolen said the 11 employees at the downtown location will not lose their jobs as a result of the move. USPS is considering keeping a small storefront presence downtown.

Completion of the renovations and the relocation is expected to take six to nine months after a buyer is found for the 18,660 square foot building on Guadalupe Street at Hutchison Street. Bolen said the newly-renovated Stagecoach Road location will probably have the same number of PO boxes — 1,663 — as the downtown location.

Bolen said the Stagecoach Trail location will offer significantly-improved customer parking and customer access. He said the move will not cause current downtown post office customers to lose their PO box numbers. He said the cost of PO box services will not change as a result of the move.

Improvements to the Stagecoach Road post office will include the addition of retail counter service, a bulk mail acceptance unit, a PO box section, and the installation of an automated postal center in the lobby, Bolen said. No significant changes will be made to the exterior of the facilty. Bolen said the cost of the project will not be known “until the solicitation for offers is developed and put on the street.”

Postal Service representatives will discuss the relocation at today’s San Marcos City Council meeting, which will begin at 5:30 p.m.

The meeting will be followed by about 60-75 days of due dilligence, said Bolen.

“By end of February we expect to begin marketing the MPO [downtown post office] property,” Bolen said. “We will not move the MPO retail and box section until we have confirmed a buyer for the property. The Postal Servie will be retaining the services of C.B. Richard Ellis to handle real estate marketing of the MPO property.”

Bolen said the Office Depot at 201 Springtown Way offers most of the mailing, stamps sales and shipping services available at the downtown post office. About a dozen San Marcos businesses, retailers and banks sell stamps at face value, Bolen said.

The sale of the property to a non-tax exempt party would return the prime downtown tract to the property tax rolls. The downtown post office was built in 1959.

The post office in downtown San Marcos appears to be on the verge of closing.

The US Postal Service plans to move operations from the downtown location to the San Marcos Carrier Annex at 201 South Stagecoach Trail, according to a notice posted at the downtown post office.

“The needs of the Postal Service today call for us to look at all possible avenues to reduce costs, consolidate operations and increae efficiences,” states the notice. “In particular, advances in mail-processing technology, alternate access, declining mail volumes and route consolidations have contributed to a number of underutilized facilities.”

A USPS spokesperson will offer a presentation on the matter at Tuesday’s city council meeting. City spokesperson Trey Hatt said the city has no more information on the issue at this time, though he said residents years ago successfully convinced USPS to keep a retail presence downtown when the annex on Stagecoach Trail opened.

“The Postal Service wishes to work in partnership with the community,” states the notice. “The community is invited to participate with comments.”

A USPS spokesperson was not immediately available for comment.

The city council meeting will be at City Hall (630 East Hopkins Street) and begin at 5:30 p.m.

  1. It would be nice if a major employer could be attracted to that building (not just retail). It’s a pretty decent size. Also good the building will be back on the property tax rolls and all the employees will keep their jobs. These are silver linings. I’m sad the downtown building will be closed and I still think it will be significantly less convenient for people who don’t want to drive especially (downtown area has more people in walking distance of the Post Office, and more public transit access), but there is some good news here within the bad!
