Hernandez Elementary art students have been incorporating art into their historical studies about to Veterans Day remembrances.
SMCISD art teacher Kay Posey and Texas State University student teacher Leigh Hubbard have taught the students about Flanders Fields, the poppies of Belgium, and World War I. They also focused on a study of the small island of Iwo Jima in the Pacific, southeast of Japan, and its role in WWII.
Incorporating TEKS objectives of “culture, line, primary colors, and rhythm,” student artists designed red poppy posters, US flags of distinction, and camouflage designed paper bags with an eagle face and wings. All of the projects are on display in the Hernandez cafeteria, and will remain up through next week in anticipation of the Veterans Day program on November 11 at 1:30 pm in the cafeteria. Veterans and families are invited.
