Just two days after taking home the district championship in soccer, San Marcos Academy’s Middle School Boys Cross Country team added its own trophy to the shelf, winning the Christian Athletic League of San Antonio (CALSA) tournament on Oct. 17.

Competing at River City Christian School in San Antonio, all the Bear runners finished in the top 15 at the event, with Marshall Marburger, an eighth grader from Kyle, taking second overall and Alex Heldstab, an eighth grader from Buda, coming in just five seconds behind in third place.

Others racing for the Bears were eighth graders Brendan Christensen and Hank Shirley of Kyle and seventh graders Matthew Rindahl and Isaiah Ridge of San Marcos.

The Academy took one female runner to the meet, seventh grader Celeste Barrientos of San Marcos, who came in thirteenth.

“It was an amazing season,” said SMA Cross Country Coach Adrien Thom. “These athletes have learned how to run well-executed and smart races. Their dedication and effort have been extraordinary.”

SMA Communications Director Shelley Henry said Thom is a Kyle resident, former Marine captain, Naval Academy graduate, and veteran of two tours in Iraq.

“She is a great motivator for our student-athletes,” Henry said.
