The Tomas Rivera Mexican American Children’s Book Award 15th Anniversary Celebration will take place at the Alkek Library on the campus of Texas Stat on Oct. 20 fro 6:30-9p.m. The event is free and the public is invited to attend the celebration which will include talks, reading, music and a reception. Cake and other refreshments will be served.

Slated to speak at the event is San Marcos mayor Daniel Guerrero, Texas State University president Denise Trauth and the 2011 Tomas Rivera Award winner for 2011 Alex Sanchez. Music will be provided by Mariachi Infantil and harpist Mariana Ornelas.

Tomas Rivera, a native of Crystal City, Texas, was the first Mexican American selected as a Distinguished Alumnus at Texas State. The award bearing his name promotes Mexican-American literature and honors authors and illustrators who have depicted the Mexican American experience.

The celebration is co-sponsored by Texas State’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction and the Wittliff Collections.
