San Marcos Academy’s middle school soccer team took home the championship trophy Oct. 15 following the Christian Athletic League of San Antonio District Tournament in Universal City.
The Bears shut-out River City Christian 5-0 in the semi-final game and then met First Baptist Academy of Universal City (FBAUC) in the finals. After two overtimes, SMA and FBAUC were locked in a 1-1 tie, but SMA took the 4-2 win in penalty kicks.
Eighth grader Jorge Serrano of Mexico, the Bears’ leading scorer during the season, was named to the all-tournament team along with Kelsey Chandler of San Marcos.
During the regular season, the only loss for the Bears came at the hands of FBAUC just four days before the district tournament. SMA finished the year with a 6-1 record, scoring 39 goals while only giving up 7 during the season. Lucas Cain was the team’s coach.
“I am very proud of the middle school soccer team,” said Scott Moore, SMA’s head varsity soccer coach, who assisted Coach Cain with the middle school. “They have shown the way for our JV and varsity soccer programs this year. They worked very hard and shared great team chemistry. The best attribute that these guys and girls have is that they are very versatile. The majority of them will jump onto the basketball/track teams and repeat their success. Coach Cain has shown great strides in his ability to motivate and teach these young players.”
The middle school soccer Bears included Celeste Barrientos, Isaiah Ridge, Matthew Rindahl, Kelsey Chandler, Zachary Cox, Isaac Holloway and Kenna Mason, all of San Marcos; Chelsea Parker and Christopher Alexander of Kyle; Alex Terry of Benton, Arizona; Sean Driscoll of Spring Branch; Songhyeon Im of Seoul, Korea; Alexander Roberts of Port Aransas; Jerry Sainah of Denton; Jorge Serrano of Mexico; and Candace Slaton of Iola.Email | Print
