STAFF REPORT

Six candidates for two San Marcos City Council seats will engage tonight in the League of Women Voters debate, usually the most anticipated local election debate.

The debate is 7 p.m. today at the San Marcos Activity Center, 501 E. Hopkins Street. Questions from the audience will be allowed on a first come, first served basis as time allows.

In the crowded Place 3 contest, former city council member John Thomaides, a small business owner, is running against Seton administrator Toby Hooper, retired police Cmdr. Terry Nichols and Texas State student Nicholas Cubides. In Place 4, incumbent Chris Jones, a Texas State career services advisor, is being challenged by retired banker Wayne Becak.

Early voting begins Oct. 24 and runs through Nov. 4. The last day for the county elections administrator to receive applications for ballots by mail is Nov. 1.

Video of the debates will be posted on San Marcos Mercury on Tuesday. The Mercury will also publish the leagues voters guide online.
