Grammy award winner and percussionist Poncho Sanchez will give a music clinic and performance at Texas State University on Oct. 17.

A clinic will be given to percussion students at 11 a.m. in room 233 of the Music Building, followed by a clinic and performance with Texas State’s award-winning Salsa del Rio at 2 p.m. in room 216. This event is free and open to the public.

Sanchez is considered one of the most influential conga players and percussionists in Latin jazz. He’s been featured on albums by artists Cal Tjader, Mongo Santamaria, Tito Puente and Terrance Blanchard. In 2000, the album, Latin Soul, earned Sanchez a Grammy for Best Latin Jazz. As a bandleader, he’s recorded more than 20 albums, including his latest Chano y Dizzy!, in which he pays tribute to two pioneers of Latin jazz – Chano Pozo and Dizzy Gillespie.
