Candidates for two city council seats will square-off at a debate on Thursday sponsored by the San Marcos Council of Neighborhood Associations.

The debate, to commence at 7 p.m., will precede a reception where candidates can mingle with their prospective constituents. Grande Communications will sponsor the reception. Both events will be at the San Marcos Activity Center, which is located at 501 East Hopkins Street.

Candidates will field questions from attendees.

Candidates for Place 3 include Nicholas Cubides, Toby Hooper, Terry Nichols, and John Thomaides. Candidates for Place 4 include Wayne Becak and incumbent Chris Jones. City council members are elected at-large.

CONA is an organization through which representatives of various neighborhoods collaborate to advance neighborhood interests. The group formed in the late 1970’s over concerns about the effect of development on neighborhood residents.

For those who miss this week’s debate, there will be another on Oct. 17 sponsored by the San Marcos Area League of Women Voters. The LWV debate, also free and open to the public, will be at 7 p.m. at the San Marcos Activity Center.
