Pulitzer Prize finalist Tim O’Brien will read from his work in Kyle on Oct. 7.

O’Brien, endowed chair of creative writing at Texas State University, will read at 7:30 p.m. at the Katherine Anne Porter Literary Center.

O’Brien was an infantryman in the Vietnam War from 1968-1970. After returning to the U.S., he completed graduate studies at Harvard University and worked as a reporter for The Washington Post. He later launched his literary career in 1973 with the memoir If I Die in a Combat Zone. He went on to write Northern Lights, Going After Cacciato (which won the 1979 National Book Award), In the Lake of the Woods, Tomcat in Love, and July, July. The Things They Carried, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, was published in 1990.

O’Brien has taught creative writing to masters of fine arts students at Texas State since 1999. He has held the university’s endowed chair in creative writing six times — more than any other visiting author.

O’Brien’s Oct. 7 reading, co-sponsored by the Burdine Johnson Foundation and Texas State’s Department of English, is free and open to the public.
