Breaking News: Thomaides seeks return to San Marcos City Council

John Thomaides, who fell 41 votes short of being San Marcos Mayor last year, is running for Place 3 on the city council.

Thomaides filed today for a place on the Nov. 8 ballot, making him the fourth candidate to enter the race to succeed Fred Terry, who is not running. He will face retired police Cmdr. Terry Nichols, who formally kicked off his bid yesterday; Seton healthcare contract negotiator Toby Hooper; and Texas State University senior Nicholas Cubides.

First elected in 2003, Thomaides won by the widest margin of any opposed candidate on the city ballot for each of his two re-election bids. In 2006, he won 61.6 percent of the vote and, in 2009, he won 63.3 percent in a three-way race. But he was bested last year in the mayor race by Daniel Guerrero, who won 3,460 votes to Thomaides’ 3,419.

In his current bid, Thomaides appoint Saul Gonzales as his campaign treasurer, a departure from his previous elections when Bibb Underwood held that role.

Thomaides owns and is general manager of Alpha Pure Water, a company that sells water filtration and treatment systems.
