Youth council, Broadway holding school supplies drive on Thursday

STAFF REPORT

The Greater San Marcos Youth Council and Broadway Bank will sponsor a “Stuff the Bus” school supplies drive on Thursday for San Marcos CISD children.

Besides providing assistance to children, GSMYC’s “Back to School Reception” will offer refreshments and networking opportunities contributors and attendees. Attendees may also visit with GSMYC staff and tour the organization’s resource and counseling center and its emergency shelter.

The event will be held 1 p.m. to 5 p.m Aug. 11 at 1402 Interstate 35 North. At 4:30 p.m. attendees may participate in a group photo and actual bus stuffing.

The youth council is a non-profit organization founded in the mid-80s in San Marcos. The youth shelter rented its first house in 1986 in a San Marcos neighborhood, and in summer 1989, Stokes Construction built a 16-bed shelter designed by Jeff Kester & Associates. GSMYC later built a basketball court, counseling, resource center, and classroom next to the shelter.

The youth council is governed by a nine-member board of community leaders and employs more than 20 caretakers for the shelter’s children. The caretakers provide counseling and other support services to Hays County children younger than 18, and to the children’s families.
