Texas Music Theater, a live music venue on the courthouse square in downtown San Marcos, has been named a finalist in the Best Adaptive Reuse category of the Texas Downtown Association’s Presidents Awards program.

The San Antonio Street venue opened in 1941 as the Plaza Theater and became the Holiday Theater in 1958. More recently, it was Gordo’s, a bar and dance club that closed in 2008. The venue reopened in March as the Texas Music Theater following extensive renovations. It is owned by Scott Gregson, Gray Gregson and Allen Shy.

The Best Adaptive Reuse award recognizes the conversion of existing or underutilized buildings into new uses. Adaptive Reuse is a process that adapts buildings for new uses while retaining their original features.

Finalists will make a presentation at the Texas Downtown Development and Revitalization Conference in Nacogdoches on Nov. 3. Winners will be announced at the an awards gala that evening.

The Texas Downtown Association, established in 1985, is a statewide nonprofit organization comprised of more than 400 members involved in downtown revitalization projects.
