Former Mayor Susan Narvaiz, who earned a GED as an adult after dropping out high school, has been honored by the advocacy group Literacy Texas for her work on behalf of adult literacy.
She will be presented the Champions of Literacy award at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 9 in a ceremony held in conjunction with the annual Literacy Texas Conference.
“Susan Narvaiz is a true champion of adult learners and a model for what someone with help from a literacy program can accomplish in their lives,” said Lester Meriwether, Literacy Texas’ board president. “As former mayor of San Marcos, she has promoted the cause by showing up and speaking about the issue whenever and wherever needed. Adult literacy needs a true advocate and we are fortunate in Texas to have her.”
Narvaiz served three terms from 2004 to 2010. She did not seek re-election to a fourth last year.
