Driver charged in elderly pedestrian’s death

San Marcos police have arrested a 30-year-old man for intoxication manslaughter after an 81-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed in the 1500 block of the Interstate 35 south access road about 3 a.m. Sunday.

Sabino Cortez, age 81, of Kerrville, died at the scene after he wandered away from a nearby hotel where he was staying with family members for the Easter holiday.

The elderly man was struck as he attempted to cross the south bound access road along Interstate 35.

According to police, the family reported him missing and provided identification of the victim. San Marcos Police Department’s Victim’s Services responded to assist the family.

Police charged Michael Solis with intoxication manslaughter, a second degree felony. He was jailed at the Hays County Law Enforcement Center under a $100,000 bond.

This was the third vehicle-related fatality in San Marcos this year.
