Writing center food drive benefits Hays County Food Bank

SUBMITTED REPORT

The Writing Center at Texas State University is holding its annual Spring Food Drive in conjunction with the Hays County Food Bank. Donations are being collected at the Writing Center, located in Flowers Hall G09, through May 2.

While most food collection drives focus on the winter holidays, the need for food donations is not seasonal. Each summer children in Hays County go hungry without the school lunch programs that provide meals each weekday during the school year. Texas State students, faculty and staff can help the Texas State Writing Center and the Hays County Food Bank fill this gap with food and cash donations.

Last semester the center’s Fall Food Drive collected about 400 pounds of food as well as valuable cash donations. Jerry Gracey, executive director of the Hays County Food Bank, said the food bank’s “purchasing power, as well as low operating costs, makes it possible to turn a $10 donation into enough food to feed a family of four for a week.”

The Texas State community can help by donating non-perishable food items or money. Thanks to the generosity of the center’s food drive sponsors, donations of at least two food items or $2 will get the donor’s name entered into a raffle for gift certificates including $25 from the University Book Store, two free meals from Mamacitas and $25 from Wake the Dead Coffeehouse.
