The top-dog Hot Dogs fended off a flock of Illeagles on Sunday in the final game of the Unicycle Football League’s regular season.
The Illeagles had been pecking away at the Hot Dogs’ lead for much of the game. But a last-minute comeback attempt never took flight, and the Hot Dogs escaped with a 56-48 victory.
“Unfortunately, the Hot Dogs put their meat where their mouths were, and we were unable to rake them over the coals,” said Daniel “Air Dan” McCarthy, a player for the Illeagles.
If the Illeagles could have won the game, they would have soared into the playoffs. Instead, their hopes for postseason play fluttered back down to earth.
Meanwhile, the Hot Dogs finished regular-season play with the best record in the league. They will face the league’s fourth-place finisher at 2 p.m. Sunday on the grounds of the San Marcos Farmers Market, at 104 C.M. Parkway.
It’s the top game of a Sunday doubleheader. In the second game of the afternoon, the league’s second- and third-place teams will square off.
Winners from each game will then meet in the Stupor Bowl, which is scheduled for April 17.
Thanks for covering the games!
