Texas State program offers financial aid assistance for local students

The recently opened Center for P-16 Initiatives will be hosting FAFSA Monday’s at San Marcos High School from now until the end of March for those people seeking financial aid for the 2011-2012 academic years. The federal government supplies millions of dollars each year in the forms of loans and grants to help people pay for college, and filling out the FAFSA is the first step in this process. The sessions are held from 4-6 p.m. every Monday in the Career Center.

The FAFSA Monday’s are open to the public and everybody from graduating seniors to returning adult students are encouraged to attend. Attendees will be assisted in filling out the application for federal financial aid, and be given advice on some best practices with regards to pursuing higher education. It is most helpful to have 2010 tax information handy when filling out the FAFSA. Students under the age of twenty-four will need their parents’ financial information to complete the application.

The Center for P-16 Initiatives is also working in conjunction with the Austin Chamber of Commerce to bring FAFSA Saturday’s to the many outlying communities of San Marcos and Austin. The help sessions will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at varying locations. Contact the center for further information.

As preparation for applying for federal aid, the Center for P-16 Initiatives is supporting the McCoy Business School’s Tax Preparation services for those who earned $50,000 or less in 2010. The services run through March 31, save March 13-20 for spring break, in room 125 at the McCoy College of Business. Tax services are available on Tuesday’s from 3-7 p.m., and on Thursday’s from 3-5 p.m.
