Currie Pipkins scored 23 points as San Marcos Academy won its playoff opener Tuesday night.
The San Marcos Academy (SMA) boys basketball team opened the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) playoffs Tuesday night with a 67-34 home court win against St. Dominic Savio.
The Bears took control late in the second quarter, expanding a 21-17 lead to 32-20 at halftime. The first five minutes of the third quarter broke the game as the Bears assembled an 18-2 run for a 50-22 lead.
“With this being the first playoff game, we had a lot of veteran leadership step up and help us win tonight,” said SMA coach Kelia Price. “The coaches did a good job of keeping the team poised throughout the entire game, and the players responded well especially during the third quarter where we … played the type of basketball that we are capable of playing on a regular basis.”
Currie Pipkins led the Bears with 23 points, followed by John Nealon with 12 and Sabas Castillo with 11.
Defensively, the Bears forced 20 turnovers.
SMA will take on the second round of the playoffs at home Saturday (4 p.m.) against the winner of Thursday’s game between Tomball/Rosehill Christian and Pasadena First Baptist Christian.Email | Print
