Public invited to nominate capital improvement projects

SUBMITTED REPORT

San Marcos residents will have an opportunity to comment on future major infrastructure projects during a public meeting for the 2012-2017 Capital Improvements Program at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10 at the Activity Center, 501 E. Hopkins.

The city’s Capital Improvements Department is responsible for planning, designing, and constructing the City’s infrastructure, including streets, drainage, airport, parks, facilities, water, wastewater and electric utilities. Development Services coordinates the preparation of the CIP with the long range master planning process.

Projects in the Capital Improvements Program are typically significant or long-term projects, such as the Wonder World Drive Extension, Fire Station 5 or the Rio Vista Neighborhood Infrastructure Project. The CIP is planned for a minimum of five years, with project updates provided quarterly.

The city council establishes five- and 10-year CIP programs that are updated annually as part of the budget process. Projects are included in the CIP in response to community needs and city council priorities.

The kickoff will be held at the San Marcos Activity Center in Room 2.  A new Project Nomination Form will be introduced. The public is encouraged to attend as city staff will review this year’s schedule and discuss a few upcoming projects.

“We hope the new project nomination form will make public participation easier,” said Matthew Lewis the city’s Development Services interim director. Tips on filling out the form will be offered at the meeting.  Completed forms will be accepted at Development Services through Thursday, Feb. 17.

The nomination form will be available on the home page at www.sanmarcostx.gov or can be picked up at the Development Services and CIP Departments, second floor, Municipal Building, 630 E. Hopkins. For information, please contact Development Services at 512-393-8230.
