Jazz historian Dan Morgenstern headlines Eddie Durham celebration

Dan Morgenstern, world renowned jazz historian and eight-time Grammy winner for program notes, will present a lecture on Eddie Durham’s legacy during the Eddie Durham Jazz Celebration Feb. 4 in Evans Auditorium at Texas State University.

Morgenstern’s lecture will begin at 7 p.m. The Eddie Durham Jazz Celebration is free and open to the general public.

The 2011 celebration will also feature an all-star band, boasting such greats as trumpeter Mike Williams and tenor saxophonist Doug Lawrence of the Count Basie Band, legendary trumpeter Marvin Stamm and drummer Arthur Latin of Harry Connick Jr.’s band.

Durham, a native of San Marcos, is widely credited with being a pioneer of amplified guitar–influencing fellow Texan Charlie Christian, who became one of the most important guitarists in jazz history. Durham worked with iconic swing era bands including the Count Basie Band.
