KYLE — Kyle Police Department (KPD) Chief Michael Blake resigned Friday to become the police chief in Bastrop.

Blake’s last day will be Feb. 25, he said, so he could help the city in its transition to new police leadership.

“It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the citizens of Kyle over the past three years, and I will forever appreciate the support I have received during my tenure,” Blake said in a memo to City Manager Larry Lambert.

Blake, who had previously been chief of police in Tomball, was named police chief in Kyle in January 2008 coming to a city with about 27,000 people and only 18 sworn personnel on the police force. Blake campaigned hard for more forces and better facilities, but the city, which has budgeted for more than 30 officers, has been constrained by the economy.

Kyle Mayor Lucy Johnson praised Blake’s performance in Kyle.

“I’m very honored to have had Chief Blake lead our city’s police department for the last two years,” Johnson said. “Even though Chief Blake’s tenure here was fairly short, his accomplishments will benefit our city of many years to come. We have transitioned successfully into a civil service form of police management, instituted voluntary meet and confer, doubled the number of officers patrolling the city, increased the training for all officers, improved our communication resources both internally and externally, and brought a level of professionalism and respect to the department.”

Johnson said a search will begin immediately for a new police chief.
