Dunbar Heritage Association plans annual MLK celebration

The Dunbar Heritage Association will host its annual Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration on Monday, January 17 at 10:30 a.m. at the Hays County Courthouse followed by a march to Dunbar Community Center.

The public is invited to participate. Former Mayor David Chiu will serve as the master of ceremonies at the Hays County Courthouse. The program will include a musical selection by Alaric Robertson of First Baptist Church as well as guest speaker William Norris of the Pride of San Marcos Lodge 494.

Following the program at the courthouse, there will be a march down LBJ Drive to Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive. The march will end at Dunbar Center for a birthday reception and MLK display. The Dunbar Heritage Association invites participants to park at the Dunbar Center, 801 MLK Drive, at 9:30 a.m. Vans will run every 15 minutes to the Hays County Courthouse.

The Calaboose African American History Museum located at 200 MLK Drive will also be open and will feature local exhibits of San Marcos pioneers.

On November 2 1984, Ronald Reagan declared the third Monday of each month in January as Martin Luther King, Jr. Day to commemorate the life and contributions of the Civil Rights leader. “Everyone in the community is invited to help celebrate this great man’s birthday,” said Dunbar Heritage Association President Harvey Miller.
