His initial concern was replaced with surprise, when he learned that he had been selected for San Marcos CISD’s student of the month. Superintendent, Dr. Patty Shafer personal congratulated DeLeon and explained the honor. “Out of almost 7,500 students in our District, you are the student of the month,” she said.
The principal of Bowie Elementary School, Karen McGowan, was also present at the ceremony. “Sam is a true Bowie champion,” she said. “After running a campaign this fall and giving a rousing speech, he was elected by his peers as president of the Bowie Student Council.”
McGowan listed DeLeon’s accomplishments, such as being a choir member who has performed in many community programs and a member of the safety patrol on campus. “As a school leader, Sam assists in identifying ways to make the school a better place for students. He is truly a role model and a leader at Bowie,” McGowan said.
DeLeon indicated that his favorite subject is math, although science and reading are close seconds. Outside of school, he enjoys playing basketball. His grandmother is a judge in Carnes City and he would like to follow in her footsteps by one day pursuing a legal career.
