The Texas State men’s basketball team stayed with Mississippi into the second half Wednesday night, but lost, 83-72, in the first round of the Cancun Governor’s Cup in Cancun, Mexico.
Mississippi took a 12-0 lead. From that point, the game was, basically, even. The Bobcats rallied to make it a competitive first half that featured seven ties and eight lead changes. But Ole Misses ended the half with a 6-0 streak and a 40-35 lead.
The Bobcats cut that deficit to two, but Ole Miss came back and extended its lead to as many as 13 in the second half.
Texas State fell to 2-8, while Ole Miss improved to 8-2.
The Bobcats will play Appalachian State Thursday at 6 p.m. Appalachian State (4-5) lost, 82-79, to Colorado State (6-3) in the Governor’s Cup Wednesday night.
Cameron Johnson and Eddie Rios each scored 16 points to lead the Bobcats. Mississippi’s Trevor Gaskins led all scorers with 21 points.
Texas State shot 47.3 percent (26 of 55), while Mississippi shot 45.8 percent (27 of 59). Normally a strong rebounding team, particularly on the offensive board, Texas State struggled against Ole Miss. The Rebels outrebounded Texas State, 45-22. Ole Miss dominated its defensive board, 29-4, while holding almost even, within 18-16, on its offensive board.Email | Print
