Total lunar eclipse to take place in the wee hours of Tuesday

122010eclipseSTAFF REPORT

The Know Thyself Center will host a Winter Solstice/Lunar Eclipse event at Aquarena Center, 921 Aquarena Springs Drive, Tuesday from 2-5 p.m.

The event will center around meditation and reflection. A lunar eclipse will take place on the date of winter solstice, Dec. 21. The eclipse on the solstice happens once every 25,000 years or so.

The eclipse will take place on Tuesday starting around 1:40 a.m. Central Standard Time. The moon will turn a deep reddish brown and, thanks to the winter solstice, the moon will appear at the highest peak in the sky, which will afford a much better view of the phenomenon. The eclipse will last until 4:05 a.m.

This is the only total lunar eclipse taking place in 2010. The eclipse will also be streamed live on the internet by the National Aeronautics and Space Association (NASA) at www.nasa.gov/topics/solarsystem/features/watchtheskies/index.html.

The next total lunar eclipse on the solstice will take place in 2485.
