Ranked seventh statewide by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC), the San Marcos Academy (SMA) boys basketball team improved to 14-2 with an easy three-game sweep to the Lions Hoops Classic championship at Sunnybrook Christian Academy last week.
The Bears will next play on Jan. 11, at home against Austin Regents Academy.
SMA claimed the title with a 53-39 win against San Antonio Christian. SMA started the game with an 18-4 lead and never looked back.
“This was a good tourney for us to play in, and I am glad all of our players contributed to the championship, not just our starters,” SMA coach Kelia Price said. “We are starting to form a real cohesive winning team with team concepts, just not individual players. We played well throughout the tourney.”
The Bears began the tournament with a 92-23 win against Sunnybrook Christian Academy. The 69-point margin was the largest for SMA in more than 10 years. SMA’s Curry Pipkens led all scorers with 21 points.
In the semifinals, the Bears notched a 54-41 win against George Gervin Academy. Pipkens again led the Bears with 21 points.Email | Print
