A portion of eastbound Aquarena Springs Drive will be restriped Wednesday to create dual left turn lanes to access northbound Interstate-35.
The one-day project by the city’s capital improvements department will be completed during off-peak traffic hours from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Cold temperatures could be a factor in the project timeline.
One eastbound lane on Aquarena Springs Drive will be open at all times, with work scheduled to begin in the right lane and move to the left lane.
“As the primary exitway from Texas State University, this intersection experiences delays due to the large amount of traffic accessing the interstate,” states Jennifer Shell, the city’s interim director of capital improvements. “The two turn lanes will help accommodate heavy daily turning traffic and improve traffic flow during big events, such as the upcoming Texas State graduation ceremonies.”
Highway Technologies, Inc. of Austin was awarded the $9,677 construction contract, with Iteris, Inc. of Austin serving as design engineer.
The turn lane improvements will be accomplished through lane restriping, the addition of signage and signal light timing. Completion of the project has been scheduled for completion before Dec. 20, when southbound I-35 Exit 206 for Aquarena Springs Drive will be closed for renovations to the River Ridge entrance ramp.
