Texas State’s Mariachi Nueva Generacion took first place at the recent 16th Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza in San Antonio.
Texas State’s Mariachi Nueva Generacion was named the top college group at the 16th Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza in San Antonio. It is the fourth time in the last five years that the group has taken first place at the event.
The three top spots in the college vocal competition were also garnered by Texas State singers, with Vanessa Moreno taking first, Amy Zuniga second and Karen Zavala third.
The competition featured Mariachi groups and vocalists from colleges, high schools, middle schools and elementary schools. More than 1,000 children and teens competed at the Extravaganza. The event took place at San Antonio’s Municipal Auditorium last weekend.
Placing second in the college division was Boston’s Berklee School of Music. In third place was the University of Texas-San Antonio.
Rio Grande City High School took first place in the high school division, followed by San Antonio Fox Tech in second and Roma High School in third. Veterans Middle School of Rio Grande City won the middle school division with San Antonio’s Austin Academy taking second and Irving Academy third.
Mariachi is a part of the Multicultural Music Area of the School of Music at Texas State. The area is comprised of salsa and mariachi ensembles, as well as a mariachi teaching certificate and a newly formed masters program in Latin American music.
