River City Ballet stages ‘The Nutcracker’

A live performance of “The Nutcracker” will be at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 18 and 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 19 at the San Marcos High School Performing Arts Center.

River City Ballet, the youth ballet company of Central Texas, will host the performance. For  years, River City Ballet has performed “The Nutcracker” each holiday season in addition to producing their various spring shows. This year, the ballet has chosen guest artists for its annual holiday performance.

Kathryn Boren, who starred last year, will again dazzle audiences with her performance as the Snow Queen and Sugar Plum Fairy. Boren currently dances with American Ballet Theatre. Calvin Royal III – also from the American Ballet Theatre will perform the roles of Snow King and Prince Orchade.

“In addition to “The Nutcracker”, this holiday season’s show will feature an original contemporary work, Ave Maria, and a short documentary film about River City Ballet by award-winning director Stan von Miller of Terlingua Films,” said Caitlin Kelly, assistant director of the ballet.

River City Ballet serves all Texas Hill Country communities surrounding San Marcos, ranging from Austin to northern San Antonio. Dancers are chosen through a rigorous audition process during the late spring.
