Texans trounce Navarro, move to semifinals

STAFF REPORT

Trinity Wilson rushed for 170 yards and three touchdowns last Friday night, leading Wimberley to a 40-14 high school football win against Geronimo Navarro for the championship in Class 3A Region IV Division II.

The 14-0 Texans play again Friday night against Region III champ Coldspring-Oakhurst (13-1) at Floyd Casey Stadium in Waco (7:30 p.m.) in the state semifinals.

Navarro never challenged Wimberley in the rematch of a game earlier this season that determined with District 26-3A champion. The Texans held a 17-0 lead into the third quarter, then really poured it on in the end with three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, increasing their lead to 40-7 at Bob Shelton Stadium.

Navarro outgained the Texans, 389 yards to 350. Navarro running back Eric Schleier rushed 19 times for 137 yards.

However, Navarro made two turnovers, one more than the Texans. That extra turnover turned directly into a touchdown when Wimberley’s Travis Payton returned a fumble six yards to the end zone.

The Texans delivered another big play when Brady Lambert threw a 57-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Burtschell in the third quarter.

Wimberley defeated Navarro, 42-28, on Oct. 29. Last week’s win marked the second time this year that the Texans scored their second win against a Class 3A contender. The Texans also defeated Cuero twice this season.
